Climate

Coverage of the archipelago by the Météo-France service contributes to the safety of goods and people in varying weather conditions. It is located at the Saint-Pierre-Pointe-Blanche airport and issues severe weather bulletins, as well as special alert bulletins for the appropriate local authorities. The service is available from 5:45 a.m. to the time the last plane lands on the archipelago. The service also provides information on weather conditions related to maritime activities. Fishing areas and zones used by ferries are also closely monitored.

Two ocean currents—the Labrador current and the warm waters of the Gulf Stream—are in close proximity to the archipelago, thereby creating a relatively high average level of humidity of 80% and, at times, dense fog. There are 140 days of rain annually, with a total of 1,258 mm of precipitation.

The average temperature on the archipelago is 5 °C. August is the warmest month (16 °C) and February is the coldest (-3 °C). However, strong winds are quite common (on average, 140 days of violent winds a year), thus affecting the temperature felt on the archipelago.
