GeographyThe Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago is sometimes described as the place where France meets America. In fact, the French archipelago is much closer to Canada than it is to France: it is located 4,300 km to the west of Paris (France), 1,800 km to the east of Montréal (Canada) and only 25 km to the southwest of the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland (Canada). The archipelago is made up of eight islands, with a total area of 242 km2, 44 km long and with 120 km of coastline. The two main islands are Saint-Pierre (26 km2) and Miquelon (216 km2). In spite of its smaller size, Saint-Pierre is the most populated island in the archipelago, due to its natural harbour. The following geographical maps provide a more detailed view of the archipelago and of its location in relation to Canada. Maps
